Our wayfinding signage strategy and design for the whole of the public realm at Expo 2020 is now open to the public. After 7 years on the project, we are very proud to be part of the first World Expo in the MENA region which opened on October 1st, 2021 to a very strong public reception. Our strategy leads visitors seamlessly around the pavilions and ultimately through the Expo. The wayfinding and signage system provides maps, directions and navigational assistance to help visitors understand the site and find their way around.

Spaceagency is excited to be part of the Riyadh Complete Communities initiative. As part of a larger design team including Aecom and Harry Dobbs, we are developing strategies to improve the public realm of 15 selected Riyadh neighborhoods to encourage walking, cycling, and public life. Streets function as the place for interaction and communication, transportation, social and commercial activities for the general public. Reclaiming streets for all users is an important objective of this initiative. Especially in cities that have been characterized as auto-dependent for decades, there is a need to reprioritize community development objectives for a more sustainable and livable environment.

Spaceagency has designed the new Manchester city centre map as part of the Greater Manchester Connected Wayfinding project for Transport for Greater Manchester, in collaboration with Manchester City Council. 250,000 city centre maps have been distributed to visitor information centres, hotels, stations and the convention centre. The vision for the Connected Wayfinding project is to create an outstanding pedestrian urban environment in Manchester that puts pedestrians at the heart of the movement strategy for the city and wider region. The project aligns with the City Centre Transport Strategy 2040, which focuses on creating an integrated, well coordinated transport system which supports walking and cycling alongside easy modal interchange to the public transport system. Spaceagency is currently designing the pilot scheme for a city centre roll out of pedestrian totem signs as part of the integrated pedestrian and transport information system. Design proposals have been scrutinised by key stakeholders, including TfGM’s disability design reference group, to ensure accessible product sizing, information hierarchy, legibility and Equalities Act compliant text sizing. © Crown copyright and database rights 2018 OS 0100022610.

Wayfinding design is part of the informational layer through which we navigate the world. The role of the wayfinding designer is to uncover the latent structure of a building or urban space and to make it visible and comprehensible. Wayfinding is a little-known field of design that crosses a number of disciplines, including urban design and planning, product design, graphic design, information design and behavioural psychology. Without any higher education programmes dedicated to the field, wayfinding is often poorly understood.

Relaunch of Dreamland, Margate

Spaceagency has designed the Wayfinding and Signage for reopening of the Dreamland amusement park in Margate, Kent. Together with architects D_raw and Aecom, we have just concluded an intensive 5 months redesign process of the historic amusement park. It has been an exciting experience and we are looking forward to the opening tomorrow, the 26th of May!

Spaceagency's director Sarah Manning will be discussing the role of Design in the public space at this year's Clerkenwell design week, chaired by Independent journalist David Michon.

Please join us at the talks space in Spa Fields (next to the Design Fields exhibition) at 1.30 pm on Thursday the 25th May.

Committees plan our cities and architects shape our buildings, but who helps humans navigate their way through this manufactured environment? One could argue that successful architecture is self explanatory; so are public signage and design elements aimed directly at those using the space really that important? Joining the discussion are Sarah Manning of wayfinding studio Spaceagency, designer Morag Myerscough and Oliver Goodhall, co-founder of We Made That, who will be considering what makes great public design – clarity, simplicity, imagination or innovation?

Sarah Manning is a founding director of the design and research practice, Spaceagency, which specializes in Experience Design. Spaceagency believes the human experience of a space is paramount. Focusing on cognitive aspects of how people navigate through environments, Spaceagency is concentrating on the interface between people and the spaces they inhabit – the communication they receive in the environment, the elements they interact with at a human scale, the influence these have on their behavior.

While many tech companies are looking at the user experience through the medium of the screen, Spaceagency is looking at user experience through the medium of the built environment, and are interested in how this might evolve in the future to be the interface with both the physical world as it is now, as well as the digital, informational world that will be integrated into our homes, workplaces and cities in the future.

Teaching in Cardiff

Peter has been invited back to Cardiff University to teach in this year's Urban Design Master programme. Students will be working on the Kings Cross site in Central London. Our overarching topic will be 'Inclusivity' and students will be challenged to articulate their own, personal response to this topic.

Spaceagency is delighted by the ongoing involvement with Cardiff University.

The MA Urban Design will enable you to learn through design, gain familiarity with theory, undertake research and study development and design control processes, all of which are intrinsic to the discipline of urban design.

Urban design is a discipline that sits between a number of built environment areas of knowledge including urban policy, architectural design, landscape design and property valuation.

Studio teaching is built around development sites in real contexts to develop creative, practical and sustainable solutions to a range of urban design problems.
